TELOMERES & AGING
WHAT IS A TELOMERE?
Telomeres are sections of genetic material, caps at the end of each chromosome whose role is to prevent chromosomal fraying when cells replicate. When our cells age, it is the telomeres which shorten. Eventually, as the telomeres become too short cell replication is impacted, the cell stops dividing and ultimately dies - a normal biological process. Telomeres function to stabilize chromosomes, support replication, and help regulate gene expression, this then affects the cell’s age.
By testing your telomeres it will help establish your cells' biological age as it relates to the average cellular age of the general population. With this knowledge, we can then select certain therapies aimed at slowing the loss of telomeres, and the onset of signs of aging and age-related conditions.
